Skandic 440LT

It is no secret that if you want to buy a snowmachine in the Arctic the best place to do it is Anchorage.  Snowgo's live a charmed life in the valley.  Hauled on trailers, kept in garages, maintained by certified mechanics, rarely driven, and plentiful.  Craigslist and AlaskaList are frequented by the snowmachine saavy who are looking for that cherry Ski-Doo 2002 Summit 144, or parts for their 1984 Alpine II.

Easily the longest functioning snowmachine that Joe has ever owned, the 2001 Ski-Doo Skandic 440LT was purchased from an mature recreational trapper in Eagle River.  The 440LT, now known as 'Willow Buster', came with only 400 miles on it.

If you knew what a 440LT is before reading this then I don't need to tell you it is a very specialized and coveted machine.  In Joe's own words, it is a "Rough riding SOB, not for girls."

The immediate modifications that were made by Joe were to disengage the key and tether for easy starting.  The annoying beeping when in reverse was also disabled.  Screw-in studs were added to the track to improve the 0-30 time from 5.6 seconds to 4.8.

Over the course of 5 winters Joe accumulated in the neighborhood of 8,500 miles on his 440LT.  Many of these miles were to and from camp and along the trap line.  While the 440LT did not go anywhere fast, it did get there and it seldom got stuck.  When it did get stuck it usually only took a good yank with one arm to dislodge it and get back on the trail (dislodge the machine, not the arm, more on whether Joe's shoulder itself is Joe Proof or not later).

The 440LT is the epitome of Joe-Proof, it performed well in adverse conditions over a long period of time, survived multiple repair attempts by Joe, and is still running.  While Joe has recently sold this machine he may have a chance to buy it back.  In an inspired business move called the 'redneck-buy-back', Joe may actually get his precious 440LT back in better shape and for less money then when he sold it.  The fact that the sled is now located 200 miles upriver also works in Joe's favor, giving him a reason to drive back through new country.

We proudly certify 440LT made by Ski-Doo as Joe Proof!
